Fixing Small Areas of Rotted Wood

Wood decay is the result of dry wood coming in contact with moisture. This can come from a variety of sources, including leaky downspouts, faulty plumbing and strong rains. Since rotted wood is both unsightly and problematic, it’s important to immediately address the problem. Before calling for a replacement, however, we recommend trying to repair it first. Handyman Connection® of Lexington explains how:

Gather the Right Materials

You can save time by preparing all the necessary tools and materials before you start. This way, you won’t have to stop in the middle of the repair to run to the local hardware store. You’ll need a wood chisel, paint brush, putty knife, utility knife, rasp and a sanding block. You’ll also need 100 grit sandpaper, wood hardener and polyester filler.

Apply Wood Hardener and Filler

First, remove all the rotted wood using a sharp tool. When done, coat the area completely with some wood hardener to help solidify and strengthen the wood fibers. Then, mix polyester wood filler, and fill the gap with it using a putty knife. You’ll have at least 10 to 15 minutes to work before the filler fully hardens.

Smoothen the Area

Polyester may sag on vertical repairs, so we recommend waiting until the filler reaches the hardness of soap before proceeding. Afterward, carefully carve it using a chisel or putty knife. You can also use a rasp or Surform plane to shape it into your desired form. If you are working on medium to large repairs, you would need at least two layers of filler. Finish the repair by sanding the area smooth, priming the filled area and finally repainting it.
